tied round her baby's neck when he was taken away from her soon after

his birth。 Then Hecuba察beholding him so beautiful察and knowing him to

be her son察wept for joy察and they all forgot the prophecy that he would be

a burning torch of fire察 and Priam gave him a house like those of his

brothers察the Trojan princes。

The fame of beautiful Helen reached Troy察 and Paris quite forgot

unhappy OEnone察and must needs go to see Helen for himself。 Perhaps he

meant to try to win her for his wife察before her marriage。 But sailing was

little understood in these times察 and the water was wide察 and men were

often driven for years out of their course察 to Egypt察 and Africa察 and far

away into the unknown seas察where fairies lived in enchanted islands察and

cannibals dwelt in caves of the hills。

Paris came much too late to have a chance of marrying Helen察

however察he was determined to see her察and he made his way to her palace

beneath the mountain Taygetus察beside the clear swift river Eurotas。 The

servants came out of the hall when they heard the sound of wheels and

horses' feet察and some of them took the horses to the stables察and tilted the

chariots against the gateway察 while others led Paris into the hall察 which

shone like the sun with gold and silver。 Then Paris and his companions

were led to the baths察where they were bathed察and clad in new clothes察

mantles of white察and robes of purple察and next they were brought before

King Menelaus察and he welcomed them kindly察and meat was set before

them察and wine in cups of gold。 While they were talking察 Helen came

forth from her fragrant chamber察 like a Goddess察 her maidens following

her察and carrying for her an ivory distaff with violet´ coloured wool察which

she span as she sat察and heard Paris tell how far he had travelled to see her

who was so famous for her beauty even in countries far away。

Then Paris knew that he had never seen察and never could see察a lady so

lovely and gracious as Helen as she sat and span察while the red drops fell

and vanished from the ruby called the Star察and Helen knew that among all

the princes in the world there was none so beautiful as Paris。 Now some

say that Paris察by art magic察put on the appearance of Menelaus察and asked

                                         Tales of Troy

Helen to come sailing with him察and that she察thinking he was her husband察

followed him察 and he carried her across the wide waters of Troy察 away

from her lord and her one beautiful little daughter察 the child Hermione。

And others say that the Gods carried Helen herself off to Egypt察and that

they made in her likeness a beautiful ghost察 out of flowers and sunset

clouds察whom Paris bore to Troy察and this they did to cause war between

Greeks and Trojans。 Another story is that Helen and her bower maiden

and her jewels were seized by force察when Menelaus was out hunting。 It

is only certain that Paris and Helen did cross the seas together察and that

Menelaus and little Hermione were left alone in the melancholy palace

beside the Eurotas。 Penelope察we know for certain察made no excuses for

her beautiful cousin察but hated her as the cause of her own sorrows and of

the deaths of thousands of men in war察 for all the Greek princes were

bound by their oath to fight for Menelaus against any one who injured him

and stole his wife away。 But Helen was very unhappy in Troy察 and

blamed herself as bitterly as all the other women blamed her察and most of

all OEnone察who had been the love of Paris。 The men were much more

kind to Helen察and were determined to fight to the death rather than lose

the sight of her beauty among them。

The news of the dishonour done to Menelaus and to all the princes of

Greece ran through the country like fire through a forest。 East and west

and south and north went the news此 to kings in their castles on the hills察

and beside the rivers and on cliffs above the sea。 The cry came to ancient

Nestor of the white beard at Pylos察 Nestor who had reigned over two

generations of men察who had fought against the wild folk of the hills察and

remembered the strong Heracles察and Eurytus of the black bow that sang

before the day of battle。

The cry came to black´bearded Agamemnon察in his strong town called

;golden Mycenae察─because it was so rich察it came to the people in Thisbe察

where the wild doves haunt察 and it came to rocky Pytho察 where is the

sacred temple of Apollo and the maid who prophesies。 It came to Aias察the

tallest and strongest of men察in his little isle of Salamis察and to Diomede of

the loud war´cry察the bravest of warriors察who held Argos and Tiryns of the

black walls of huge察stones察that are still standing。 The summons came to

                                                14

the western islands and to Ulysses in Ithaca察 and even far south to the

great island of Crete of the hundred cities察 where Idomeneus ruled in

Cnossos察 Idomeneus察 whose ruined palace may still be seen with the

throne of the king察and pictures painted on the walls察and the King's own

draught´board of gold and silver察and hundreds of tablets of clay察on which

are written the lists of royal treasures。 Far north went the news to

Pelasgian Argos察 and Hellas察 where the people of Peleus dwelt察 the

Myrmidons察but Peleus was too old to fight察and his boy察Achilles察dwelt

far away察in the island of Scyros察dressed as a girl察among the daughters of

King Lycomedes。 To many another town and to a hundred islands went the

bitter news of approaching war察for all princes knew that their honour and

their oaths compelled them to gather their spearmen察 and bowmen察 and

slingers from the fields and the fishing察and to make ready their ships察and

meet King Agamemnon in the harbour of Aulis察and cross the wide sea to

besiege Troy town。

Now the story is told that Ulysses was very unwilling to leave his

island and his wife Penelope察and little Telemachus察while Penelope had

no wish that he should pass into danger察and into the sight of Helen of the

fair hands。 So it is said that when two of the princes came to summon

Ulysses察he pretended to be mad察 and went ploughing the sea sand with

oxen察and sowing the sand with salt。 Then the prince Palamedes took the

baby Telemachus from the arms of his nurse察Eurycleia察and laid him in

the line of the furrow察 where the ploughshare would strike him and kill

him。 But Ulysses turned the plough aside察and they cried that he was not

mad察but sane察and he must keep his oath察and join the fleet at Aulis察a long

voyage for him to sail察round the stormy southern Cape of Maleia。

Whether this tale be true or not察Ulysses did go察leading twelve black

ships察with high beaks painted red at prow and stern。 The ships had oars察

and the warriors manned the oars察to row when there was no wind。 There

was a small raised deck at each end of the ships察on these decks men stood

to fight with sword and spear when there was a battle at sea。 Each ship

had but one mast察with a broad lugger sail察and for anchors they had only

heavy stones attached to cables。 They generally landed at night察 and

slept on the shore of one of the many islands察when they could察for they

greatly feared to sail out of sight of land。

The fleet consisted of more than a thousand ships察 each with fifty

warriors察so the army was of more than fifty thousand men。 Agamemnon

had a hundred ships察Diomede had eighty察Nestor had ninety察the Cretans

with Idomeneus察 had eighty察 Menelaus had sixty察 but Aias and Ulysses察

who lived in small islands察had only twelve ships apiece。 Yet Aias was so

brave and strong察and Ulysses so brave and wise察 that they were ranked
