Chosen Andronicus察 surnamed Pius For many good and great deserts to
Rome。 A nobler man察a braver warrior察Lives not this day within the city
walls。 He by the Senate is accited home察 From weary wars against the
barbarous Goths察 That with his sons察 a terror to our foes察 Hath yok'd a
nation strong察 train'd up in arms。 Ten years are spent since first he
undertook This cause of Rome察 and chastised with arms Our enemies'
pride察 five times he hath return'd Bleeding to Rome察 bearing his valiant
sons In coffins from the field察 and at this day To the monument of that
Andronici Done sacrifice of expiation察And slain the noblest prisoner of
the Goths。 And now at last察laden with honour's spoils察Returns the good

in the Capitol and Senate's right察Whom you pretend to honour and adore察
That you withdraw you and abate your strength察Dismiss your followers察

and察 as suitors should察 Plead your deserts in peace and humbleness。
SATURNINUS。 How fair the Tribune speaks to calm my thoughts。

integrity察And so I love and honour thee and thine察Thy noble brother Titus
and his sons察And her to whom my thoughts are humbled all察 Gracious
Lavinia察Rome's rich ornament察That I will here dismiss my loving friends察

TITUS。 Hail察 Rome察 victorious in thy mourning weeds Lo察 as the
bark that hath discharg'd her fraught Returns with precious lading to the
bay From whence at first she weigh'd her anchorage察Cometh Andronicus察
bound with laurel boughs察To re´salute his country with his tears察Tears of
true joy for his return to Rome。 Thou great defender of this Capitol察Stand
gracious to the rites that we intend Romans察 of five and twenty valiant
sons察Half of the number that King Priam had察Behold the poor remains察
alive and dead These that survive let Rome reward with love察These that I

Goths have given me leave to sheathe my sword。 Titus察 unkind察 and
careless of thine own察Why suffer'st thou thy sons察unburied yet察To hover
on the dreadful shore of Styx拭Make way to lay them by their brethren。
They open the tombАThere greet in silence察as the dead are wont察And
sleep in peace察slain in your country's wars。 O sacred receptacle of my joys察
Sweet cell of virtue and nobility察 How many sons hast thou of mine in
store That thou wilt never render to me more LUCIUS。 Give us the
proudest prisoner of the Goths察That we may hew his limbs察and on a pile
Ad manes fratrum sacrifice his flesh Before this earthy prison of their
bones察 That so the shadows be not unappeas'd察 Nor we disturb'd with
prodigies on earth。 TITUS。 I give him you´ the noblest that survives察The
eldest son of this distressed queen。 TAMORA。 Stay察 Roman brethen
Gracious conqueror察Victorious Titus察rue the tears I shed察A mother's tears
in passion for her son察And if thy sons were ever dear to thee察O察think my
son to be as dear to me Sufficeth not that we are brought to Rome To
beautify thy triumphs察and return Captive to thee and to thy Roman yoke察
But must my sons be slaughtered in the streets For valiant doings in their
country's cause拭 O察 if to fight for king and commonweal Were piety in
thine察it is in these。 Andronicus察stain not thy tomb with blood。 Wilt thou
draw near the nature of the gods拭Draw near them then in being merciful。
Sweet mercy is nobility's true badge。 Thrice´noble Titus察spare my first´
born son。 TITUS。 Patient yourself察madam察and pardon me。 These are their
brethren察whom your Goths beheld Alive and dead察and for their brethren
slain Religiously they ask a sacrifice。 To this your son is mark'd察and die
he must T' appease their groaning shadows that are gone。 LUCIUS。 Away
with him察and make a fire straight察And with our swords察upon a pile of
wood察 Let's hew his limbs till they be clean consum'd。 Exeunt TITUS'
SONS察with ALARBUS TAMORA。 O cruel察irreligious piety CHIRON。
Was never Scythia half so barbarous DEMETRIUS。 Oppose not Scythia
to ambitious Rome。 Alarbus goes to rest察and we survive To tremble under
Titus' threat'ning look。 Then察madam察stand resolv'd察but hope withal The
self´same gods that arm'd the Queen of Troy With opportunity of sharp
revenge Upon the Thracian tyrant in his tent May favour Tamora察 the
Queen of Goths´ When Goths were Goths and Tamora was queen´ To quit
