oncerning the advent of the One toward whom all the ordinances of the sacrificial system pointed。 Thus the world was to be kept from universal apostasy。

Not without the most determined opposition was the divine purpose carried out。 In every way possible the enemy of truth and righteousness worked to cause the descendants of Abraham to forget their high and holy calling察and to turn aside to the worship of false gods。 And often his efforts were all but successful。 For centuries preceding Christ's first advent察darkness covered the earth察and gross darkness the people。 Satan was throwing his hellish shadow athwart the pathway of men察that he might prevent them from gaining a knowledge of God and of the future world。

Multitudes were sitting in the shadow of death。 Their only hope was for this gloom to be lifted察that God might be revealed。

With prophetic vision David察the anointed of God察had foreseen that the coming of Christ should be ;as the light of the morning察when the sun riseth察even a morning without clouds。; 2 Samuel 234。 And Hosea testified察 His going forth is prepared as the morning。; Hosea 63。 Quietly and gently the daylight breaks upon the earth察dispelling the shadow of darkness and waking the earth to life。 So was the Sun of Righteousness to arise察 with healing in His wings。; Malachi 42。 The multitudes dwelling ;in the land of the shadow of death; were to see ;a great light。; Isaiah 92。

The prophet Isaiah察looking with rapture upon this glorious deliverance察exclaimed

;Unto us a Child is born察 Unto us a Son is given此 And the government shall be upon His shoulder此 And His name shall be called Wonderful察Counselor察The mighty God察 The everlasting Father察The Prince of Peace。 Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end察 Upon the throne of David察 And upon His kingdom察 To order it察and to establish it With judgment and with justice From henceforth even forever。 The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this。; Verses 67。

In the later centuries of Israel's history prior to the first advent it was generally understood that the coming of the

                                                                      689

Messiah was referred to in the prophecy察 It is a light thing that Thou shouldest be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob察and to restore the preserved of Israel此I will also give Thee for a light to the Gentiles察that Thou mayest be My salvation unto the end of the earth。; ;The glory of the Lord shall be revealed察─the prophet had foretold察 and all flesh shall see it together。; Isaiah 496察405。 It was of this light of men that John the Baptist afterward testified so boldly察when he proclaimed察 I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness察Make straight the way of the Lord察as said the prophet Esaias。; John 123。

It was to Christ that the prophetic promise was given此 Thus saith the Lord察the Redeemer of Israel察and His Holy One察to Him whom man despiseth察to Him whom the nation abhorreth察 。 。 thus saith the Lord察 。 。 I will preserve Thee察and give Thee for a covenant of the people察to establish the earth察to cause to inherit the desolate heritages察that Thou mayest say to the prisoners察Go forth察to them that are in darkness察Show yourselves。 。 。 。 They shall not hunger nor thirst察neither shall the heat nor sun smite them此for He that hath mercy on them shall lead them察even by the springs of water shall He guided them。; Isaiah 497´10。

The steadfast among the Jewish nation察descendants of that holy line through whom a knowledge of God had been preserved察strengthened their faith by dwelling on these and similar passages。 With exceeding joy they read how the Lord would anoint One ;to preach good tidings unto the meek察─ to bind up the brokenhearted察to proclaim

liberty to the captives察─and to declare ;the acceptable year of the Lord。; Isaiah 611察2。 Yet their hearts were filled with sadness as they thought of the sufferings He must endure in order to fulfill the divine purpose。 With deep humiliation of soul they traced the words in the prophetic roll

;Who hath believed our report拭 And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed

;For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant察 And as a root out of a dry ground此 He hath no form nor comeliness察 And when we shall see Him察 There is no beauty that we should desire Him。

;He is despised and rejected of men察 A Man of Sorrows察and acquainted with grief此 And we hid as it were our faces from Him察 He was despised察and we esteemed Him not。

;Surely He hath borne our griefs察 And carried our sorrows此 Yet we did esteem Him stricken察 Smitten of God察and afflicted。

;But He was wounded for our transgressions察 He was bruised for our iniquities此 The chastisement of our peace was upon Him察 And with His stripes we are healed。

;All we like sheep have gone astray察 We have turned everyone to his own way察 And the Lord hath laid on Him The iniquity of us all。

;He was oppressed察and He was afflicted察 Yet He opened not His mouth此 He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter察 And as a sheep before her shearers is dumb察 So He openeth not His mouth。

                                                                      691

;He was taken from prison and from judgment此 And who shall declare His generation拭 For He was cut off out of the land of the living此 For the transgression of My people was He stricken。

;And He made His grave with the wicked察 And with the rich in His death察 Because He had done no violence察 Neither was any deceit in His mouth。; Isaiah 531´9。

Of the suffering Saviour Jehovah Himself declared through Zechariah察 Awake察O sword察against My Shepherd察and against the Man that is My Fellow。; Zechariah 137。 As the substitute and surety for sinful man察Christ was to suffer under divine justice。 He was to understand what justice meant。 He was to know what it means for sinners to stand before God without an intercessor。

Through the psalmist the Redeemer had prophesied of Himself

;Reproach hath broken My heart察 And I am full of heaviness此 And I looked for some to take pity察 But there was none察 And for comforters察 But I found none。 They gave Me also gall for My meat察 And in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink。; Psalm 6920察21。

Of the treatment He was to receive察He prophesied察 Dogs have compassed Me此the assembly of the wicked have enclosed Me此they pierced My hands and My feet。 I may tell all My bones此they look and stare upon Me。 They part My garments among them察and cast lots upon My vesture。; Psalm 2216´18。

These portrayals of the bitter suffering and cruel death of the Promised One察sad though they were察were rich in promise察for of Him whom ;it pleased the Lord to bruise; and to put to grief察in order that He might become ;an offering for sin察─Jehovah declared

;He shall see His seed察He shall prolong His days察 And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand。 He shall see of the travail of His soul察and shall be satisfied

;By His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many察 For He shall bear their iniquities。 Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great察 And He shall divide the spoil with the strong察 Because He hath poured out His soul unto death此 And He was numbered with the transgressors察 And He bare the sin of many察 And made intercession for the transgressors。; Isaiah 5310´12。

It was love for sinners that led Christ to pay the price of redemption。 ;He saw that there was no man察and wondered that there was no intercessor察─none other could ransom men and women from the power of the enemy察 therefore His arm brought salvation unto him察and His righteousness察it sustained him。; Isaiah 5916。

;Behold My Servant察whom I uphold察 Mine Elect察in whom My soul delighteth察 I have put My Spirit upon Him此 He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles。; Isaiah 421。

In His life no self´assertion was to be mingled。 The homage which the world gives to position察to wealth察and to talent察was to be foreign to the Son of God。 None of the means that men employ to win allegiance or to command

                                                                      693

homage察was the Messiah to use。 His utter renunciation of self was foreshadowed in the words

;He shall not cry察 Nor lift up察 Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street。 A bruised reed shall He not break察 And the smoking flax shall He not quench。; Verses 2察3。
