offered the ram in sacrifice察 and Aietes nailed the ram's fleece to a
beech察in the grove of Ares the war´God。
And after awhile Phrixus died察and was buried察but his spirit had no
rest察for he was buried far from his native land察and the pleasant hills of
Hellas。 So he came in dreams to the heroes of the Minuai察and called
sadly by their beds察'Come and set my spirit free察that I may go home to
my fathers and to my kinsfolk察and the pleasant Minuan land。'
And they asked察'How shall we set your spirit free'
'You must sail over the sea to Colchis察 and bring home the golden
fleece察and then my spirit will come back with it察and I shall sleep with
my fathers and have rest。'
He came thus察 and called to them often察 but when they woke they
looked at each other察and said察'Who dare sail to Colchis察or bring home
the golden fleece' And in all the country none was brave enough to try
it察for the man and the time were not come。
Phrixus had a cousin called AEson察 who was king in Iolcos by the
sea。 There he ruled over the rich Minuan heroes察as Athamas his uncle
ruled in Boeotia察and察like Athamas察he was an unhappy man。 For he
had a step´brother named Pelias察 of whom some said that he was a
nymph's son察and there were dark and sad tales about his birth。 When
he was a babe he was cast out on the mountains察and a wild mare came
by and kicked him。 But a shepherd passing found the baby察 with its
face all blackened by the blow察 and took him home察 and called him
Pelias察because his face was bruised and black。 And he grew up fierce

and lawless察and did many a fearful deed察and at last he drove out AEson
his step´brother察and then his own brother Neleus察and took the kingdom
to himself察and ruled over the rich Minuan heroes察in Iolcos by the sea。
And AEson察 when he was driven out察 went sadly away out of the
town察leading his little son by the hand察and he said to himself察'I must
hide the child in the mountains察or Pelias will surely kill him察because he
is the heir。'
So he went up from the sea across the valley察through the vineyards
and the olive groves察and across the torrent of Anauros察toward Pelion
the ancient mountain察whose brows are white with snow。
He went up and up into the mountain察 over marsh察 and crag察 and
down察till the boy was tired and footsore察and AEson had to bear him in
his arms察 till he came to the mouth of a lonely cave察 at the foot of a
mighty cliff。
Above the cliff the snow´wreaths hung察dripping and cracking in the
sun察 but at its foot around the cave's mouth grew all fair flowers and
herbs察as if in a garden察ranged in order察 each sort by itself。 There they
grew gaily in the sunshine察 and the spray of the torrent from above察
while from the cave came the sound of music察and a man's voice singing
to the harp。
Then AEson put down the lad察and whispered ´
'Fear not察but go in察and whomsoever you shall find察lay your hands
upon his knees察and say察 In the name of Zeus察the father of Gods and
men察I am your guest from this day forth。;'
Then the lad went in without trembling察for he too was a hero's son察
but when he was within察 he stopped in wonder to listen to that magic
song。
And there he saw the singer lying upon bear´skins and fragrant
boughs此 Cheiron察the ancient centaur察 the wisest of all things beneath
the sky。 Down to the waist he was a man察 but below he was a noble
horse察his white hair rolled down over his broad shoulders察and his white
beard over his broad brown chest察and his eyes were wise and mild察and
his forehead like a mountain´wall。
And in his hands he held a harp of gold察and struck it with a golden

key察 and as he struck察 he sang till his eyes glittered察 and filled all the
cave with light。
And he sang of the birth of Time察and of the heavens and the dancing
stars察and of the ocean察and the ether察and the fire察 and the shaping of the
wondrous earth。 And he sang of the treasures of the hills察 and the
hidden jewels of the mine察 and the veins of fire and metal察 and the
virtues of all healing herbs察and of the speech of birds察and of prophecy察
and of hidden things to come。
Then he sang of health察 and strength察 and manhood察 and a valiant
heart察and of music察and hunting察and wrestling察and all the games which
heroes love此 and of travel察and wars察 and sieges察and a noble death in
fight察and then he sang of peace and plenty察and of equal justice in the
land察and as he sang the boy listened wide´eyed察and forgot his errand in
the song。
And at the last old Cheiron was silent察and called the lad with a soft
voice。
And the lad ran trembling to him察 and would have laid his hands
upon his knees察 but Cheiron smiled察 and said察 'Call hither your father
AEson察for I know you察and all that has befallen察and saw you both afar
in the valley察even before you left the town。'
Then AEson came in sadly察 and Cheiron asked him察 'Why camest
you not yourself to me察AEson the AEolid'
And AEson said ´
'I thought察Cheiron will pity the lad if he sees him come alone察and I
wished to try whether he was fearless察and dare venture like a hero's son。
But now I entreat you by Father Zeus察let the boy be your guest till better
times察and train him among the sons of the heroes察that he may avenge
his father's house。'
Then Cheiron smiled察 and drew the lad to him察 and laid his hand
upon his golden locks察and said察'Are you afraid of my horse's hoofs察fair
boy察or will you be my pupil from this day'
'I would gladly have horse's hoofs like you察 if I could sing such
songs as yours。'
And Cheiron laughed察and said察'Sit here by me till sundown察 when

your playfellows will come home察and you shall learn like them to be a
king察worthy to rule over gallant men。'
Then he turned to AEson察 and said察 'Go back in peace察 and bend
before the storm like a prudent man。 This boy shall not cross the
Anauros again察 till he has become a glory to you and to the house of
AEolus。'
And AEson wept over his son and went away察 but the boy did not
weep察so full was his fancy of that strange cave察and the centaur察and his
song察and the playfellows whom he was to see。
Then Cheiron put the lyre into his hands察and taught him how to play
it察till the sun sank low behind the cliff察and a shout was heard outside。
And then in came the sons of the heroes察AEneas察and Heracles察and
Peleus察and many another mighty name。
And great Cheiron leapt up joyfully察 and his hoofs made the cave
resound察as they shouted察'Come out察Father Cheiron察 come out and see
our game。' And one cried察'I have killed two deer' and another察'I took
a wild cat among the crags' and Heracles dragged a wild goat after him
by its horns察for he was as huge as a mountain crag察and Coeneus carried
a bear´cub under each arm察and laughed when they scratched and bit察
